The Expoquimia trade fair will host the 16th Mediterranean Congress of Chemical Engineering (MeCCE), taking place from 2 to 4 June 2026 at Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via venue. This renowned international event serves as a platform to showcase pioneering research in chemical engineering and foster strategic collaborations across sectors to promote a more sustainable future
With the same theme as Expoquimia 2026, “Transforming the Industry, Shaping the Future”, this new edition of the MeCCE will bring together leading industry professionals, researchers, and academics from chemical engineering and other scientific disciplines to address urgent environmental and technological challenges.

The congress will focus on key topics such as circularity, water resources, decarbonisation, hydrogen, the use of critical raw materials, the application of advanced process control technologies such as digital twins and artificial intelligence, as well as solutions in bioengineering, food, fine chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. Additionally, innovative approaches to teaching and learning in chemical engineering will be discussed.
2026 Call for Abstracts
Chaired by Rosa Nomen, Professor of Chemical Engineering at IQS – Universitat Ramon Llull, the organising committee of MeCCE 2026 has been formed, marking the start of preparations for the congress. This event aims to encourage the presentation of innovative research and projects from various sectors aimed at combating climate change.
The abstract submission period will open in July, with all proposals reviewed by a newly appointed scientific committee comprising esteemed experts from academia and industry. Selected contributions will be featured in the official congress programme.
Initiated in 1978 by Expoquimia and the Spanish Society of Industrial Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (SEQUI), the MeCCE has been a cornerstone event for advancing chemical engineering in Spain and internationally. In recent editions, the involvement of AIQS Alumni (the professional community of graduates from the Institut Químic de Sarrià) and the Association and College of Industrial Engineers of Catalonia has expanded the range of participating professionals. Over time, it has evolved into a vital forum for fostering collaboration between academia and industry.
At its last edition in 2023, under the theme “Chemical Engineering, Leading Solutions for the Planet”, the congress addressed critical issues such as the circular economy, advanced materials, and industrial digitalisation.
For the 2026 edition, MeCCE aims to attract professionals in engineering, industry, and research from countries including Italy, France, Greece, Morocco, Turkey, Egypt, and Portugal, in addition to Spain. The congress is expected to surpass 350 participants.
As a flagship event at Expoquimia 2026, Spain’s leading chemical industry trade fair, the MeCCE will contribute to showcasing chemistry’s transformative role in manufacturing industries.
